Perched on Shuter’s Hill in Alexandria, Virginia, The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands as a majestic tribute to America’s first president and an enduring symbol of Freemasonry. Constructed between 1922 and 1932, this iconic structure was designed to commemorate George Washington’s Masonic legacy, as he was a member of Alexandria Lodge No. 22 and deeply involved with the Freemasons, the fraternity that emphasizes principles of morality, charity, and brotherhood. 


The monument’s design draws inspiration from the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its classical architectural style and grandiose profile make it visible for miles around, creating an unmistakable landmark on the Northern Virginia skyline. Standing 333 feet tall, the memorial is an impressive mix of neoclassical and Art Deco architecture. The nine-story tower features detailed symbolic engravings, pillars, and murals that narrate not only Washington’s contributions to the country but also the history and teachings of Freemasonry.


Inside, visitors are welcomed by expansive halls, historical exhibits, and intricate artifacts related to Washington’s life, his Masonic association, and the history of Alexandria. The grand Memorial Hall, which occupies the entire first floor, is a stunning space housing a towering bronze statue of Washington. This statue, standing nearly 17 feet tall, honors him both as a leader and as a Mason, with his Masonic apron and tools meticulously incorporated into the sculpture. Nearby, exhibits highlight artifacts, including Washington’s Masonic Bible, which holds a special significance as the Bible used during his inauguration as president in 1789.


The upper floors offer further immersion into Masonic history. Each level of the tower is dedicated to a different aspect of Freemasonry or Washington’s life, with several lodges, libraries, and special collections open to the public. One notable feature is the replica of the Lodge Room where Washington participated in Masonic rituals and gatherings, a meticulously recreated space that evokes the spirit of the early fraternity.


The observation deck, located on the top floor, offers panoramic views of the Potomac River, the Washington Monument, and the sprawling landscapes of Alexandria and Washington, D.C. The vantage point not only provides breathtaking scenery but also serves as a symbolic reminder of the connection between the monument’s historical role and the city’s modern vibrancy.
